Cleaning and Care

Plexiglass, also known as acrylic glass, is a popular material used in various applications. I use it as a canvas for my paintings. While it offers a lightweight and durable alternative to glass, it is essential to handle and maintain plexiglass plates with care to preserve their clarity and prevent damage. Below are my expert recommendations for the proper care and cleaning of fragile plexiglass plates.
Firstly, it is crucial to avoid using abrasive materials when cleaning plexiglass. Scratches can easily occur if harsh scrubbing pads or rough cloths are used. Instead, opt for a soft microfiber cloth or a sponge that is gentle on the surface. This will help maintain the integrity of the plexiglass while effectively removing dust and dirt.
When it comes to cleaning solutions, I advise to use a mild soap mixed with warm water. A solution of 10% dish soap and 90% water is effective for routine cleaning. Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners, as they can cause clouding and damage to the surface of the plexiglass. Additionally, never use solvents such as acetone or alcohol, as these can lead to irreversible damage.
To clean the surface, dampen the microfiber cloth with the soapy water solution and gently wipe the plexiglass plate in a circular motion. This technique helps to lift dirt without scratching the surface. For stubborn stains, allow the soapy solution to sit for a few minutes before wiping it away. Rinse the cloth with clean water and wipe the surface again to remove any soap residue.
After cleaning, it is important to dry the plexiglass thoroughly to prevent water spots. Use a separate dry microfiber cloth to gently pat the surface dry. Avoid air drying, as this can leave streaks or spots that may detract from the appearance of the painted surface.
In addition to regular cleaning, proper hanging of your plexiglass work is essential. Hang them away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, which can warp or discolor the material and also put tension on frame.
Finally, when handling your plexiglass artwork, always ensure that your hands are clean and free from oils or residues that could transfer to the surface. Wearing gloves can also help minimize fingerprints and smudges, maintaining the clarity of the material.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your plexiglass plates artwork remain in excellent condition, allowing the artwork to shine through while preserving the longevity of the material.
